1. New York University (NYU) is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational research university that is located in New York City.
2. The main campus of NYU is located in the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan.
3. NYU was founded in 1831, and is the largest private, nonprofit institution of higher education in the U.S., with an enrollment of more than 40,000 students.

6. Recently, the United Arab Emirates government has announced plans to fund a campus abroad for New York University in the capital city of Abu Dhabi.
7. Polytechnic University, an engineering and technology university located in Brooklyn, NY, has agreed to merge into NYU. It will become the Polytechnic Institute of New York University and will provide NYU with an engineering school for the first time in 3 decades.
8. For 4 consecutive years, NYU has been ranked as America's "#1 Dream School" by The Princeton Review.

NYU has 31 Nobel Prize winners, two Abel Prize winners, nine National Medal of Science recipients, 16 Pulitzer Prize winners, 19 Academy Award winners (more than any other American university), Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winners, and MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowship holders among its past and present graduates and faculty.
10. NYU has a very active student body for an urban campus and some of the first fraternities in the country were formed at NYU.
11. Many university traditions take place every year among the various clubs and twenty-one undergraduate residence halls at NYU. With 12,500 residents, NYU has the 7th largest university housing system in the United State and the largest among private schools.
12. NYU's sports teams are called the Violets, and their colors being the trademarked "NYU Violet" and white.
13. The school's mascot is the bobcat.
14. Almost all of NYU's sporting teams participate in the NCAA's Division III and the University Athletic Association.
15. While NYU has had All-American football players in the past, they have not had a varsity football team since the 1960s.
